Many people ask me about starting a support group. The question is- what kind of support group are *you* interested in? What kind of support groups are lacking in Dubai? Sometimes people are just interested in meeting a few others who can share the same experiences and feelings...people who will understand. Others want a more structured, educational meeting (perhaps a little safer than sharing your thoughts and feelings out loud!). I am privileged to be on the organising committee of 'Brest Friends'. This is a support group for breast cancer patients founded by Dr. Houriya Kazim. Dr Kazim is a UAE National who is the country's first female surgeon. She attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, obtained her fellowship in General Surgery then sub-specialised in Surgical Oncology and, in particular, Breast Surgery and Reconstruction at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, and the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, Texas. She has also founded the breast cancer charity, "The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Emirates".
